HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER REVIEW or HARDCORE HATIN’ ON SEASON 7

OK, this may get harsh because I will show no mercy. This show has come to piss me off immensely. I will possibly reveal a few spoilers, so I apologize if you’re not into that. I warned you. Anyways, let’s dive right in, shall we.

I started watching this show because my mom and I have a tradition of watching an episode of something before bed to ‘unwind’. Friends had been serving that purpose for a few years, which meant that we had been re-watching the show from seasons 1 to 10 for FAR too long. My sister suggested we start watching How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM), so we did. Let’s just say that initially my feelings were that I liked the concept of a show explicitly about relationships and destiny and all that gooey stuff, written as a series of casual recollections from a dad to his kids. I still did not like the ‘sit-commy’ vibe it had, as in very structured, predictable joke delivery, however there was a lot of great chemistry between the cast and I could stand watching the show.

What I especially started to like was that the writers ensured that each character was dynamic. Little by little, we learn a bit more about each character, in a way that was far more intimate than Friends ever was because we got to see memories and past events in each of their lives. Aces, good work Bays and Thomas. I also liked the fact that each significant event mentioned was carried through. All the characters’ decisions were true to the essence of the person I grew to know and love, and the continuity was fabulous and honestly, quite impressive. I will always give this show that, because a set-up that relies entirely on past events can really fall flat on its ass if the writers forget about that shit.

HOWEVER. Let’s take season 7. Let’s take a LONG HARD LOOK at season 7. Let’s GLARE AT SEASON 7 WITH DAGGERS IN OUR EYES. Why? Because they fucked up. They fucked up big time. First of all, I’ll clarify that I do not ship characters when watching sit-coms, and I truly hate when people do. Reason being, we forget about the show dynamics and writing and focus all our viewer energy on a couple, and appreciation for writing and structure flies out the window. So does rationality, apparently, in this fandom.

Season 6 was wonderful. I loved how Barney was really getting somewhere, he was starting to change in a perfectly believable manner (because let’s face it, NOBODY lives their whole life sleeping around and partying til you drop) because of that beautiful arc about Barney’s father and him being reunited. So sweet. Then episodes like “Desperation Day” and “Garbage Island” demonstrated that Robin and Barney were truthfully over each other. They had closure. They could confidently refer to the past with simply a smile and move on, and Robin could fix Barney up with someone and “root for him”. Barney meets Nora and so sweetly falls for her; a woman who made him want to change for the better and made him stop those ridiculous lies, without even trying or asking him to, really. I was so excited for season 7 because I wanted to see how it worked out that Nora was the bride shown as the season 6 bookends (I was convinced).

Here is where they fucked up big-time. Remember how several episodes in season 6 made it clear that Barney and Robin had closure? Well, “FUCK THAT!!1!,” say the writers! “NOW ROBIN IS JEALOUS OF BARNEY AND ATTACKS PEOPLE LOLZ” Uhh, what? She, very calmly and consciously, fixed Nora and Barney up and was genuinely happy seeing that he actually liked her. Remember how at the beginning of season 7, Barney waited for Nora in that diner? He told her every single stupid story he’d used to get girls to sleep with him? How despite dental reconstruction surgery, rats, and witnessing a suicide, he still was delighted to simply be with Nora? He’s never willingly put that much effort for a girl. Not even for Robin. BUT WAIT!! Barney actually likes Robin!! He’s actually liked her ALL THAT TIME, EVEN THOUGH HE TREATED NORA DIFFERENTLY FROM ANYONE HE’S EVER BEEN WITH!! And he DUMPS HER when he’s to meet her parents!! And he’s loved Robin this whole time!!

BULLSHIT. Writers, what the fuck happened to all that brilliant continuity you’ve built for 6 seasons?! Not only do you DIRECTLY contradict episodes, but you have characters acting completely unlike themselves. Robin sabotaging Barney’s happy relationship for her own selfish good? What? Barney going from complete satisfaction, with no sign of regret or yearning at all, to this deep-seeded desire to be with Robin? Where THE FUCK did that HONESTLY come from? WHERE THE FUCK?! Remember “Noretta”, where even when his brother pointed out that Nora was the spitting image of their mother, he said something very sweet and merrily skipped off to be with her? NOPE! WRITERS SAY, “FUCK DAT BECUZ DA FANS WANT BARNEY&ROBIN TOGETHER SO LEZ MAKE IT HAPPEN!1!”

I’m not saying I didn’t see it coming. The writers fucked up also by completely forgetting about the development of Nora’s character. I was so intrigued by her in season 6, when this delicate little British girl laser tagged like a champ. They had such a great opportunity to expand on her. And they honestly fucked it up because even if they put Barney and Nora together again, I will never respect her again if she even thinks about taking Barney back after how he’s treated her. I don’t understand why every show with a cast of close friends like these INSISTS on inbreeding the characters. It’s like, you know what? Not everyone in real life actually always marries people in their close social circles. I wish that TV would actually try and integrate real life into their shows, because that’s what makes them endearing, watchable and believable.

I am disappointed because it seems like these writers have zero artistic integrity, in a show that played out so uniquely at first. This show has its moments of wisdom about love, friendships and relationships in general, and I thought they would honour that credo til the end. NOPE. This show is just like any other TV sit-com. Thanks for fucking it up.

And don’t even get me started on the pregnancy. All I’ll say is that the only way to save themselves is to abort that baby or make it a false positive or miscarriage. I think it would address an issue that’s never been brought up on a public show of this format, and it would stay true to the characters involved. But that’s just my opinion, which probably won’t fly with fans, and since Bays and Thomas are whores to their fan base, they will come up with some pretty little predictable ending to their once-interesting show. UGH.

Well done sissy. Exactly what I was thinking. TO A T. Also throughout the above summarized series of fuck ups, they have succeeded in turning Robin from Season 1 to season 7 from a strong, confident, work-focused, independent, role model of a woman to a slutty, selfish, unsuccessful, unconfident, pathetic, horrible friend, who I would not want to be friends with in any sense of the word. Also I hope Lily and Marshall realize that having the type of person who would try and make a close friend cheat on his gf who he’s finally happy with with her (aka that episode where Nora goes away for work and Robin wants to go out with Barney in an “outfit that highlights their genders”) is not the type of person they want their child to be raised around. I know I wouldn’t want my child to look up to a dumb bitchy, slutty, sad woman like Robin. So ya… I won’t get too much into it. But I am sufficiently disappointed with the way the show has fallen apart in terms of the Robin/Barney/Nora conundrum. LAAAAME and shitty.
